1. Here we find an insanely young Sarah Miles in no mood to be photographed. Petulant, capricious, volatile: she embodies all those elements we most cherish in a girl who is likely to make a scene on the front porch at 2 a.m. because another girl momentarily caught your eye earlier that evening. The posture of her long, exquisite hands suggests a nervous energy; the scowl warns of an approaching storm. It all brings to mind George Sanders’ remark to Bette Davis in All About Eve: “You’re maudlin and full of self-pity. You’re magnificent.”
